Mål og innhald

This course presents a survey of music in selected cultures of the world, including Native America, Africa, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Middle East, and Latin America. The course should be of interest to students in music and other students in the humanities.

Students will learn to recognize and place specific musical traditions within their cultural, geographical, historical and stylisitic contexts.

Basic knowedge of music theory, but this does not need to be formally documented.

Undervisningsformer og omfang av organisert undervisning

One semester of lectures including listening examples.

Obligatorisk undervisningsaktivitet

The students are expected to attend a certain number of concerts of non-western music. All mandatory instruction must be completed and approved of before the exam.

Vurderingsformer

Grading of assignment portfolio. The student will turn in 3 assignments. Internal evaluation. All assignments must be completed with a passing grade.

Assignment portfolio is valid for 2 semesters after the normal exam time.

Grading marks: A-F.

Litteraturliste

Approx. 800 pages as well as listening examples.

Emneevaluering

Evaluation will be carried out in the form of a questionnaire. A written report will be made.
