Mål og innhald

All democracies - and most electoral authoritarian regimes - rely on political parties when selecting candidates for political office. This course will address the central challenges faced by political parties in new democracies. The course will address central theoretical aspects of parties and party systems in the developing world. Designed around six central topics of parties and party systems, one seminar will discuss theoretical foundations while a follow-up seminar will centre on the application of the conceptual contributions to empirical settings in Latin America, Asia and Africa. In class discussions, emphasis is placed on the methodological foundations and data material in the literature discussed. The course is organized as seminars. Students are expected to present and discuss the course material in class.
