I took over teaching in the second half of the semester, with previous lectures being given by other members of staff. Attendance at lectures was not particularly high, but was higher in the "practical classes". I am not sure if this is normal, but perhaps students had lost interest by this stage? This course is somewhat odd in that it is taught by many different people, each with a different field of expertise. This is partly dictated by the diversity of topics in the Cognitive Sciences. But I found very little co ordination between lecturers and topics. Perhaps I did not see this because this is my first year of teaching the subject, and the others have already an understanding in place? But I think the students had some problem in seeing a "big picure". The relationship between the different topics was not clear to them. I tried to give some perspective in the final lectures and this helped, I think, but perhaps it came too late? Teaching assistant was great help in cementing things together.
Student portal was a little confusing. People often submitted itno the wrong folder, or did not find folders. We had to email around the long links. It is a bit of a cumbersome system!
The pensum was o.k.
The most important change would be to provide more context to the students. Perhaps the coordinator could give a lecture at every major topic change, to explain how the following lectures fit into the bigger picture.
